MONGOLIA – Ice Festival (for reference)

KHUVSGUL PROVINCE, NORTHERN MONGOLIA

The Ice Festival is held at Lake Khuvsgul, a 100-mile long pristine alpine lake located in the north of Mongolia, close to the Siberian border. In winter the lake freezes over, with ice around one and a half meters thick, and is thick enough to support vehicles. In places the ice piles up to form pressure ridges along the shore, creating spectacular ice formations. Often the wind blows the ice clear of snow, leaving a smooth surface of transparent ice over the eerie depths.

The ice festival itself includes a mix of traditional and modern winter events, including ice skating races, ice sumo and tug-o-war, driving skills competition, and horse sled races.  The sled races are the highlight of the festival, and the horses are fitted with spiked shoes to help them run on the ice.  Apart from the events it is an opportunity for locals to meet and exchange New Year greetings, and to provide a break from the tough routine of winter life.

Program

Day 1 Flight from Hong Kong to Beijing 08.05/11.20 for connection with flight Beijing/Ulan Bator 13.30. Transfer to hotel for overnight

Day 2 : Full day city tour: Monastery Ganden, Winter Palace, Museum, Cashemire factory. Meals: B+L+D

Day 3: Flight to the Murun at 14:00. Drive to Huvsgul Hangarid tourist camp. Dinner and overnight at tourist ger camp. Meals: B+L+D

Day 4: 11:00 Opening Ceremony of Ice Festival and Sacrificing Ceremony of Holy mountain Ikh saridag and Khuvsgul lake

14:00 Competitions: Horse sledge racing competition, anklebone shooting on the lake ice, sumo wrestling on the ice etc., All tourists can participate into the competitions

Meals: B+L+D

Day 5: Flight back to Ulan Bator to connect with flight for Beijing at 18.10.

Transfer by free hotel shuttle to airport hotel and overnight. Meals: B only

Day 6: Flight back to Hong Kong. Meals: B only
